Traineeship Programme

Traineeships

Our traineeship programme is designed to give you as wide an overview of all the key practice areas within the firm as possible whilst enough time within each division to familiarise yourself with, and make a worthwhile contribution to, the team in which you are placed. Generally your traineeship at Paull & Williamsons will comprise of four six month seats, providing the opportunity to remain with or return to one of our main groups:

Business Services including corporate, banking, oil and gas, intellectual property and pensions.
Property Services including commercial property, construction, planning and environment.
Dispute Resolution including commercial litigation, health and safety and employment.

Usually you are allocated to a specific division within a group. We will endeavour to accommodate any particular interest you have in a certain practice area.

Embarking upon a traineeship can be rather daunting at times when everything is so new and unfamiliar. There are a few points of contact which will provide you with guidance whenever you need it:

  • there is a designated partner with responsibility for trainees within each of our three main practice groups
  • each trainee is allocated to a team comprising a partner and other lawyers to whom you may go to for assistance
  • support is also provided by the Human Resources Manager.

On at least a weekly basis you will have meetings with the partner in charge of your team and have the opportunity to discuss any matter of concern at that time. Indeed the culture of the firm is based on an open door policy where you will be encouraged to speak to a partner or other qualified member of staff regarding any concern at any time. However, opportunities to use your initiative and problem-solve are also encouraged and you will be given responsibility from an early stage. You can expect to be involved in significant deals, cases and other legal transactions with a wide range of clients throughout your traineeship..
